First Community Fund finalists of 2020 are chosen
As part of our new Community Fund programme, we recently invited groups, schools and charities, which could benefit from a £500 donation of landscaping and building materials, to get in contact.
All the entries have been whittled down to the final three and it's now down to the public to decide who receives the donation.
Tyersal Youth Club
Tyersal is part of Pudsey but, due to there being no direct/easy link, the community there feel very isolated. There is a primary school for the younger children but the older children have to come into Pudsey and use one of the local high schools. This can then lead to isolation from their friends so a youth club is made available to them.
The youth club is based in the Tyersal Recreational Club but has been very sadly neglected over the years. We, the local Councillors, successfully applied for monies from the Outer West Community Committee to repair the roof and make the building water tight, however previous water damage makes the internal of the building look very ‘unloved’.
If successful, we would use the grant to purchase plasterboard and paint to repair and refresh the youth club, plus any other items required to bring the building up to an acceptable standard. This would hopefully let the youngsters using this space, feel appreciated and valued by the community. The works would be carried out by volunteers in Tyersal so would really give a sense of community ownership and pride.
Waterloo Primary School
We are seeking to make further improvements to the outside environment in August 2020. The proposed 2020 project is a sensory garden off the main playground of Pudsey Waterloo Primary School. The work will be completed by Cedar Oak Landscapes and volunteers (parents and teachers).
Beyond this application for support, the funding for the project will come from The Friends of Waterloo charity fund raising, with a contribution from Pudsey Waterloo Primary School.
Currently the school has a designated indoor space, the rainbow room, for nurture programmes to support these children’s overall well-being. The proposed new sensory garden will provide a safe outdoor space for children with additional needs to explore that is quieter than the main playground but remains part of school break times. It will also be utilised by teachers throughout the day as required for the benefit of children with additional needs providing a much needed calming outdoor environment. Additionally the space would be available for teachers and all school pupils to access as a change of environment to facilitate and development as required.
Pudsey Lowtown Primary School
Pudsey Lowtown are in the process of transforming the beautiful woodland area and adding a magnificent outdoor classroom for children to have lessons in a natural environment. As part of the PTFA we have been raising funds throughout the year for a purpose built shelter to allow children to use the area for core parts of the curriculum. The structure will allow children to go out in all weathers and take part in scientific observations of the animals and surrounding environment, as well as generating ideas for stories when fairies come to the woodland, creative maths lessons and design technology. We think that your community grant would allow us to complete the project and have children in the learning environment sooner.
It would be amazing to be granted your community fund to create a winding pebble path so that children can access the area safely, while adding log edge panels at the side of the path to demarcate some areas. Wooden beams would be helpful to create seating for children to allow them all to engage in lessons as they will be able to use clipboards (provided by the PTFA) and sit down to write. A couple of large boards to then paint with either black board paint or to attach a white board to would be good, so that teachers can draw out and record ideas. As there is a pond in the woodland area, any resources like trays and netting would be useful to allow children to access activities such as pond dipping and additional waterproof material would help to keep the decking dry. The last materials we would be looking at would be a wood to make a cupboard that would sit within the structure and house the clipboards and outdoor equipment to keep it safe from the elements.
This opportunity would enable so many children to access the woodland and encourage them to be more involved with their local environment. The children of Lowtown have been keen environmentalists and we would welcome the additional equipment and seating to benefit their learning. It is not only the children of Pudsey Lowtown that would benefit from this, but local nurseries and community groups in the local cluster also access the area.
